Why do premature newborns have to suffer?
Medical professionals described the terrible conditions that premature babies in Gaza hospitals had to endure. According to a physician from Shifa Hospital, the premature infants were piled on a single bed in inappropriate locations within the hospital hallways. In order to maintain the children's body heat and provide them some warmth, the physicians covered them in aluminum foil. Fearing that they could perish in the incubator of the Shifa Medical Complex from fuel shortages, power failures, and oxygen pipe depletion, they put them next to hot water. Every baby was meant to have their own bed, equipment, and access to proper medical treatment based on their individual circumstances and health status.
Regarding Al-Nasser Children's Hospital, medical staff and injured patients were compelled to flee the facility due to Israeli tanks encircling it. There were five premature newborns in the hospital and no physicians or medical personnel. According to a doctor from Al-Nasser Hospital, "We were all evacuated from the four hospitals, surrounded by gunfire, after the tanks gave us thirty minutes to evacuate." Two premature baby cases that required mechanical breathing were left behind by us. Israel stopped their breath and suffocated them. All international organizations, including UNRWA and the Red Cross, declined to assist us in moving them. The bodies of the five babies were discovered decomposing and being eaten by worms after three weeks of the hospital's forced evacuation. This occurred because they were not given any medical attention.
Israel continues to commit 'war crimes' in the Gaza Strip on a daily basis, resulting in a horrific humanitarian catastrophe that is unprecedented in human history. Israel has murdered thousands of Palestinian children, disobeying any international legislation that would have forbidden such acts. What blame, then, did the premature newborns have in having to endure this horrific crime?
