Targeting Palestinian academics in Gaza
During the genocide on the Gaza Strip, the occupation demolished all of the universities there and turned some of them into military barracks. The aim of the occupation is to methodically destroy every element of Gazan life, the most notable being the devastation of the educational system and the intentional targeting of the greatest number of academics.
As part of the comprehensive genocide being carried out on the Gaza Strip since October 7th of last year, Israeli army forces have killed over 95 Palestinian university professors in addition to hundreds of teachers and thousands of students, according to documentation from the Euro-Mediterranean Observatory for Human Rights. In a statement, the Observatory made it clear that the Israeli army targeted academic, scientific, and intellectual personalities in the Gaza Strip with purposeful and targeted airstrikes, among thousands of other strikes. They were crushed under the rubble, along with members of their families and other families who had fled or sought shelter with them, after dozens of them were slain in surprise direct strikes that targeted their homes.
This is regarded as a calculated and organized endeavor to destroy the educational system in an effort to make the Gaza Strip untenable and wipe out the future of the next generation.
