The Battle of Karameh

On March 21, 1968, the Israeli army attempted to take control of the Jordan River, which led to the Battle of Karameh. Eliminating the Palestinian resistance centered at the Jordanian border was the Israeli army's main goal. The Jordanian village of "Karameh," which is close to the King Hussein Bridge, a location where the Jordan River divides Jordan and Palestine, and the Palestinian border east of it, is where the fight got its name.

In the east of Jordan, in the village of Karameh, the Palestinian resistance and the Jordanian Arab Army engaged in ceaseless fighting with Israeli forces for over fifteen hours. At 11:30 on the day of the war, Israel made the first ceasefire request in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict. More than 250 Zionists were killed as the Israeli forces were routed and forced from the battlefield by the Jordanian army and the Palestinian resistance.

It was the Israeli army's first serious setback in less than 15 hours, shattering the myth of an unbeatable force. As with the defeat, the occupation launched it in an attempt to crush Palestinian resistance and send a message to the nations that support it; however, the Jordanian army banded together with Palestinian forces to turn the tide.
